Unitil Uses Exacter Predictive Technology & Analytics to Reduce Outages and Improve Reliability

Summary of the Unitil Predictive Maintenance Program with Exacter (2012-2015)

Unitil saw that outages caused by equipment failure presented the best opportunity to improve overall system reliability. They began a program targeting all of their 3 phase circuits in 2012 that lasted through 2015.  The results were so interesting that a full article was written and is 4 pole locations imagefeatured in the October 2015 issue of T&D World Magazine, click here.  To attend an informative "Case Study Webinar" of the Unitil Predictive Program, click here.  Below is a summary of the first 3 years of this reliability program:

  • Overhead equipment failure accounts for about 20%
    of Unitil power outages

  • 428 miles of 3-phase circuits targeted

  • Problematic components were found every 6.9 to 7.4 miles

  • Exacter predicted a 10% reduction in SAIDI and CMI before the program began

  • Reduction in SAIDI and CMI far exceeded Exacter's estimate of 10%

  • Power Outages have decreased

  • Outages occurring at any of the problem locations could have resulted in over 1 million CMI each year

  • Cost to conduct surveys was less than $250,000/year

  • Cost to replace problematic equipment averaged $50,000 per year
